[edit] Introduction
Autumn Brown sandstone is a commercially used natural sandstone characterised by brown, buff and earthy tones and natural variation in colour and texture. The name generally describes a particular range or blend of Indian sandstone products rather than a distinct geological classification. Its suitability for construction and landscaping depends on the stone's physical properties, including strength, water absorption, frost resistance and slip resistance, as well as its finish and intended application.

Autumn Brown sandstone can provide a varied, natural appearance because individual slabs may differ in colour, grain, veining and surface texture. Common finishes include naturally riven surfaces, which retain the stone's natural texture, and sawn, honed or other processed finishes where a more uniform surface is required.
When selecting sandstone for a project, samples should be assessed against an appropriate range or control sample because a single piece may not represent the full natural variation of the material. Technical information and test data should also be checked to establish whether the stone is suitable for its intended use, particularly where it will be exposed to weather, frost, heavy traffic or frequent wetting.

Autumn Brown sandstone is commonly used for external landscaping applications such as patios, paths, terraces, courtyards and other paved areas. It may also be used for steps, walling, copings and other landscape features where the characteristics of the selected stone are appropriate.
For paving, the required thickness, surface finish, laying method and jointing system should be selected according to the intended loading and exposure conditions. Applications subject to vehicular traffic require particular consideration of the stone's mechanical properties and the design of the supporting pavement; a thickness suitable for pedestrian paving should not automatically be assumed to be suitable for a driveway.
[edit] Installation and maintenance
External sandstone paving should be installed on an appropriately designed and prepared sub-base and bedding system. The construction should provide adequate support, falls and drainage to prevent prolonged standing water. The method of installation should be appropriate to the paving units, site conditions and expected loading.
Sandstone is a porous natural material and can absorb water and contaminants. Regular sweeping and appropriate cleaning can help maintain its appearance. Cleaning products should be selected for use with natural stone, and strongly acidic products should generally be avoided unless their suitability for the particular stone has been established. Sealers may be used where appropriate, but their selection should take account of the stone, surface finish and intended use. Sealing is not a substitute for suitable drainage or correct installation.
Natural variation in colour and texture is an inherent characteristic of sandstone and should be considered when assessing the appearance of a completed installation. Replacement stone obtained at a later date may not exactly match the original material.
